From my point of view - perhaps you already know that I am addicted to Mini - this was one of this year’s IAA highlights.

Nothing really new on the Mini booth beside this:

It’s 45 years after the premiere of the “Mini Traveller” in september 1960 that Mini presented this latest design study “Mini Concept Frankfurt” at the IAA looking back at the classic Traveller and concentrated on two words - access and loading.

The front design is quite close to the actual Mini - in some details a little more striking. The MINI Concept’s character is emphasised by retractable aluminium headlamps, air vents that turn into cup holders, and a central navigation screen that flips round to be replaced by a Jules Verne-style globe.

As a respectable nod to the past, but combined with 21st Century design technology, the lack of a B-pillar on the car allows the rear windows to slide back rather than down. And practicality is addressed with a powered rear screen, and front seats that are centrally pivoted to allow them to swing round rather than tip up to aid rear passenger access.

There are four full-sized seats inside and an extended wheelbase, with access to the boot made easy by a pair of clap-hands doors built into the end of the tailgate. A sliding tray built into the base of the floor can be pulled out to help with loading.

Further versions are due to be revealed throughout next year, with the first of them expected to reach our roads early in 2007.
